Why Selena Gomez Fans Think Justin Bieber Apologized to Her After Breakup

Is Selena Gomez singing about Justin Bieber on her new album?

That’s what many fans are wondering following the release of I Said I Love You First, her collaborative project with fiancé Benny Blanco. One track in particular, “You Said You Were Sorry,” sparked speculation the “Look at Her Now” singer was addressing her ex, whom she dated on and off between 2010 and 2018.

“Don't think about you / Happy without you,” Selena sings on the track. “More now than I ever was.”

During the chorus, the 32-year-old describes an emotional reunion with an ex who goes unnamed—and while she pointed out that the exchange was merely a fantasy, that seemed to be good for her.

“But I had a dream / You said you were sorry, said you were sorry / Sorry for everything / That you put on me, that you put on me,” Selena sings. “Our eyes were bawling rain / We finally both forgave ya / I had a dream, that's all it was / Yeah, that was enough for me.”

Before the album hit streaming services March 21, the “Good for You” singer seemed to anticipate a dissection of her romantic history with Justin—who wed Hailey Bieber in 2018 before they welcomed son Jack, 6 months, in August—though she proactively denied drawing inspiration from their relationship.

“I would like to say most of this album has nothing to do with what everyone may go to,” she told Spotify in a video published March 19. “And I think it’s important for me to say that because I’ve evolved so much, and I have experienced life with new people. I’ve had to go through transitions with friends and lose people in my life and gain new people, and I’ve had a whole new life forever.”

And while many songs on the album are explorations of Selena’s emotions, others—such as “Sunset Blvd” and “Cowboy”—showcase her sultry side.

“I don’t like to share it a lot, but I’m a very sensual person,” she continued. “I love love and sometimes I put that into words and I can feel sexy, and I love that feeling.”

But while her new music may have fans going back to her first high-profile romance, when it comes to where her love life stands these days, she’s looking ahead at building a life with Benny.
