Selena Gomez Reveals Why She Almost Didn’t Show Up to Benny Blanco’s Proposal
Turns out, Benny Blanco is a bad liar.
The music producer revealed he had to come up with a few additional white lies on the day he proposed to Selena Gomez in December—because the singer almost didn't show up to meet him.
"We had to do a lot of promo for the album," Selena recalled during a joint appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with Benny March 20. "So I woke up, and I was very confused on what was happening, on where we were going, because it seemed kind of far. So, I’m kind of a little grumpy. I’m, like, tired…I said, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to go hang out with my friends.’ And he starts, I guess, going, ‘Okay, sure. We’ll see when you get here.'"
As a result of Selena's reluctance to show up, the "Eastside" hitmaker had to scramble a bit.
"She almost didn’t even come," Benny explained. "She was like, ‘I really don’t feel that well. I think I’m just going to stay home today. Can’t we just make up the shoot another day?’ And I was like, ‘Uhh…’ I’m trying to figure out a way to do…"
"First of all, getting engaged to someone is the craziest thing in the world," he continued. "It’s like, right before you’re going to tell someone you’re going to be married to them forever. They’re like, ‘Show me how good you can lie to me.’ It’s the hardest thing in the world!"
Benny also called the week leading up to their engagement the "scariest week of my life" and revealed that the "Hands to Myself" singer was getting annoyed with him.
As he said, "She was just upset with me because the day before I was making bad lies."
Of course, the couple—who released their joint album, I Said I Love You First, on March 21—did end up getting engaged that week while having an indoor Taco Bell picnic. But, even though Benny put a ring on it, he and Selena aren't rushing into wedding planning quite yet.
Selena told Jimmy Fallon that they're "definitely not planning exactly at this moment," and had previously expressed that finishing their new album took precedence over figuring out their nuptials.
"I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world," she told Rolling Stone in an interview published March 17. "That’s my main focus right now, at least."
Benny concurred, adding that they're still basking in the excitement of being newly engaged.
"We’re very much 'take it one day at a time'-type of people. We’re still not over this moment," he said in the same interview. "Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring."
