Why Khloe Kardashian Let Tristan Thompson in Delivery Room Amid Cheating Scandal
Khloe Kardashian puts her daughter first.
The Good American founder recounted her decision to allow Tristan Thompson to be in the hospital room when she gave birth to their first baby together, True Thompson, now 6, in 2018, days after learning he was cheating on her.
"I remember when Tristan had an affair, it was public and I gave birth 48 hours later. People were like, 'Do you want him in the hospital room when you're giving birth?'" Khloe recalled on the Jan. 29 episode of her Khloe in Wonder Land podcast. "And it was my first baby, and I said, 'I do, and we're all going to pretend,' because of course I had to have all my siblings in the room and my mom."
The Kardashians star remembered, "I said, 'We're all...it's gonna be hard for you guys, but let's all act like this didn't happen, because my daughter's going to see this home footage one day, and I don't want her to ever see...' I was thinking for my daughter, True."
The 40-year-old—who also shares son Tatum Thompson, 2, with Tristan—went on to explain how watching footage from True's birth brings her back to her mindset at the time.
"I get sad if I ever see myself [back then], because I can tell I'm blank, and it's an out of body experience," she told her podcast guest Mel Robbins. "I just went into autopilot, and I just went into, 'I'm not here.' I was not present, but my body was there. I gave birth, I did what I had to do, but it was for her."
"I thought of her," Khloe added, "and I was like, 'For her memories, I want her to know her dad was in the room.'"
Once True arrived and the cameras turned off, though, the Revenge Body alum no longer had to compartmentalize and asked Tristan to leave.
"When it was done, he went along, because I was like, 'I can't talk to you,'" Khloe explained, "but [only] when I put my home camera down. I made sure to do what I needed to do for her."
The reality star credited her family—who she called her "tribe—with helping her get through that difficult time, but also noted that she withdrew from the spotlight in order to block out the noise and focus on her newborn, which is a move she learned from her ex-husband Lamar Odom's various controversies over the years.
"The crazy thing is that I would draw back to the feelings I had with Lamar," Khloe shared, "[That's how] I knew how to deal with this media scandal. I was in Cleveland, Ohio [after I gave birth], so, I was like, let me just stay here for a little bit, because that's where I gave birth, and I just knew to stay away from the noise, which L.A. has a lot of noise."
"I had a brand new baby, and I definitely isolated," she went on. "I never left my house for a few months, I was just with her...I'd built this little cocoon for her and I, and it was the most magical experience."
Ultimately, Khloe found that ignoring all of the unwanted outside attention was the best way for her to cope with all of the changes happening at once in her life.
"I was in denial about all the noise," she explained. "I just don't want to focus on it. I didn't give power to it."
