Selena Gomez and fiancé Benny Blanco chose to not attend the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, May 5.
Their appearance would have marked the first time they’ve walked a red carpet together since going public with their relationship. Selena, 32, last attended the Met Gala in 2018, while Benny, 37, has never been a guest at the event.
While neither Benny nor Selena revealed why they didn’t attend the event, they were both active on social media before the red carpet began when they shared a performance video for their joint song “Sunset Blvd.”
Even without a Met Gala red carpet moment, fans are keeping an eye out for signs the couple may attend one of the many afterparties that follow the event. In the past, celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Rihanna and Gigi Hadid have skipped the main event but made appearances at exclusive post-gala celebrations.
This year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion, and Vogue described the dress code as “a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear.” Co-chairs include Anna Wintour, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams.
Benny and Selena first met when they collaborated on her single from 2015, “Same Old Love.” They officially confirmed their romance in December 2023, with Selena going public on Instagram and calling Benny “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Much to fans’ delight, the couple has been fairly open with their romance by sharing sweet photos together, and just months after they went Instagram official, a source exclusively told Life & Style that Selena couldn’t wait for Benny to pop the question.
“She’s been telling friends she’s finally found the right guy and she’s ready to walk down the aisle,” the insider revealed in March 2024. “There are some who fear she’s rushing into things a little bit, though. They don’t want Selena to get her heart broken. Benny is planning a romantic proposal — he’s just waiting for the right time.
In May 2024, Benny gushed about the Wizards of Waverly Place alum when he made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
“When I look at her … I’m always just like, ‘I don’t know a world where it could be better than this,’” Benny said. “People always said this to me, ‘When you know you meet your best friend,’ she truly is my best friend. … We laugh all f–king day, she inspires me. I get home from work, I think I had a good day. I’m like, ‘What did you do?’ ‘Oh I just filmed this thing with Meryl Streep and then I went to a fundraiser and now I’m recording.’ My day sounds like s–t every day compared to hers.”
Benny proposed in December 2024, one year after they confirmed their romance, and Selena shared the news via Instagram.
“Forever begins now …” the Only Murders in the Building star captioned a picture showing off the diamond ring Benny had given her.
