Selena Gomez Introduces A New Chart With The First No. 1 Ever
This week, Selena Gomez makes a special kind of history on the Billboard charts. The pop and Latin musical star reaches the summit once again in the U.S., which is always cause for celebration. What makes this moment stand out from the other times she’s done so is the fact that she now claims the first-ever No. 1 on a brand new tally — one the company is introducing just as her recently-released track surges in popularity.
Billboard Launches the Hot Latin Pop Songs Chart
Billboard debuts the Hot Latin Pop Songs chart this week, one of several new additions to its expanding slate of rankings centered around Spanish-language music. The company has been steadily increasing its coverage of this growing genre, and Latin pop now has its own dedicated list.
The new tally ranks the most popular Latin pop tracks in the U.S. using a combination of airplay, sales, and streaming data, as is the formula for all “Hot”-labeled tallies published by the magazine. Leading the way in its inaugural edition is "Ojos Tristes," a joint release from Gomez and her fiance Benny Blanco. The cut also credits The Marías, a band that’s been rising rapidly in popularity in recent years.
The Marías Land Two Top 10s
"Ojos Tristes" leads the newly-launched Hot Latin Pop Songs ranking, and it’s the only track from Gomez and Blanco to appear on the list this week. The Marías, however, manage to place two songs inside the top 10. In addition to the group’s work on the No. 1 cut, The Marías also debut their own single "Lejos De Ti" at No. 6.
"Ojos Tristes" is Becoming a Breakout Hit
"Ojos Tristes" is turning out to be one of the most successful songs from I Said I Love You First, Blanco and Gomez’s first joint album together. This week, the tune appears on eight different Billboard charts. That roundup includes two debuts, as the cut arrives on the important Streaming Songs list. On that competitive tally, the collaboration opens at No. 41.
