Carlos PenaVega Explains Origin of Viral Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber ‘Call Me Baby’ Video
We all remember where we were when the iconic “Call Me Maybe” video dropped. The 2012 video featured some of our fav celebs including Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (when they were still Jelena!) and Ashley Tisdale lip-synching to the viral song by Carly Rae Jepsen. Now, Big Time Rush member Carlos PenaVega, who originally posted the video, is explaining how it came to be!
In an interview with Access Hollywood from April 2025, the Nickelodeon alum revealed that it all started at his house with his ex at the time was best friends with Selena, who told Carlos that Justin was “obsessed” with the song.
“They were over my house and Selena kept saying ‘Justin is obsessed with this song, I don’t know what to do. It’s just so annoying.’ I get why he’s obsessed with it so we pull out my Mac and we just started making ‘Hey, I just met you,’” Carlos revealed.
At the time, Carlos’ ex was best friends with Selena, so they all ended up hanging out. He also shared that making these kinds of videos actually became a bit of a tradition. “We just started making [videos],” he said. “I kept recording these videos for like a month whenever people went over my house.”
The result? An internet-breaking video that gave fans exactly what they wanted — including that unforgettable almost-kiss between Justin and Selena before they were playfully pushed away from the camera.
Of course, Jelena’s rollercoaster relationship basically deserves its own TV show. From 2010 to 2018, Justin and Selena had the world fully invested in their love story, filled with romantic highs, dramatic breakups and surprise rebounds. Even though their relationship officially ended when Justin married Hailey Bieber in 2018 (which fans felt was a little too soon after Selena), their story didn’t stop there.
In Selena’s 2022 documentary My Mind and Me, she opened up about moving on from a past relationship — without naming names — saying, “I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever, and then, just forgetting everything at the drop of a hand, it was really confusing. But I just think that needed to happen. And ultimately, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Since then, both stars have moved on. Justin and Hailey welcomed their son, Jack Blues, in August 2024, and Selena got engaged to music producer Benny Blanco in December 2024. Still, even after all these years, Jelena remains one of the most talked-about couples online!
