SAG Awards 2025: Only Murders’ Steve Martin Reacts to Cast Win After Missing Ceremony

Steve Martin has nothing but pride for his Only Murders in the Building costars.

The Hulu series had a big night at the 2025 SAG Awards Feb. 23, winning both categories it was nominated in: Martin Short won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and the cast won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. And while stars like Selena Gomez, Molly Shannon and Kumail Nanjiani were there to accept the awards, both Martin and Short were absent from the 56th annual award show—but that didn't stop them from celebrating their castmates from afar.

"I’m the buddy of a winner!" the It’s Complicated star captioned an Instagram video of the cast members that attended saying "we still don't believe it!" in unison the morning after the ceremony. "Congratulations to Martin Short for his best comedy actor award, and thank you SAG for our comedy ensemble award!"

Meanwhile, Short recognized his win in humble fashion, despite not being able to accept the trophy in person.

“The honor of being in Only Murders in the Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given,” the actor said in a statement to People following his win. “The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much.”

While it's unclear why Martin had to miss the SAG Awards, the 79-year-old revealed that Short, 74, had to skip the show because he'd contracted COVID-19 during Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary celebrations the previous weekend.

"Maya came down with Covid, (she did NOT come to the show with it!) Marty came down with it," Martin captioned a photo of Short kissing Maya Rudolph on Instagram Feb. 21 announcing that they'd have to reschedule a few tour dates as a result. "The SNL 50th Covid curse is real."

Meanwhile, their costar Selena Gomez also addressed her costars' absence while accepting the cast's ensemble win.

"Well, Marty and Steve aren't here because, you know, they don't really care," she joked. "But I don't know what to say. Thank you to Marty and Steve for helping raise me. I genuinely am just so grateful [to] everybody, the writers. Everyone deserves this, and I take it home for all of us."
