Selena Gomez Claps Back at “Sick” Body-Shaming Comments After Emilia Perez Premiere

Selena Gomez is standing up for herself.

Following the 32-year-old’s appearance at the premiere of her film Emilia Perez at the French American Film Festival in Los Angeles on Oct. 29, Selena reacted to TikTok users commenting on her appearance.

More specifically, the “Same Old Love” singer responded to a video that claimed she was “hiding” her body as she posed with her hands over her stomach.

“This makes me sick,” Selena wrote in the comments underneath the since-deleted video, according to a screenshot published by TMZ. “I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a sick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine—particularly types of bacteria not commonly found in that part of the digestive tract.”

For the movie’s premiere, Selena donned an asymmetric little black dress with a thigh high slit down the side.

And while Selena’s press run for the film has been filled with glam, the Rare Beauty founder had no problem showing off the not so glamorous parts. After the Oct. 21 premiere in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, Selena shared a picture of a breakout and poked fun at the blemishes on her skin writing on Oct. 22, “Even my skin is over me.”

The Only Murders in the Building star is no stranger to sharing her journey with her body, following her lupus diagnosis and 2017 kidney transplant.

"None of the sample sizes were fitting, and that would make me feel embarrassed," Selena told Fast Company in an interview published on Oct. 3. "Although how unrealistic is it to expect a normal woman's body not to change?"

She continued, "I had just gotten my heart broken. I didn't need to see what everyone was doing. Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I'd see on Instagram. 'Wow, I wish my body looked like that.'"

However, Selena has also been open about sharing messages of self-love amid the criticism she faces.

"I just want people to know that you're beautiful and you're wonderful,” she said in a February 2023 video. “And yeah we have days where maybe we feel like s--t but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself and my medications are important and I believe they are what helps me. So, yeah, not a model, never will be. And I think they're awesome, mind you, I just, I'm definitely not that."
